Welcome to Mrs. Hubbard’s School Nurse Page

TICKS are out in full force.  Don’t forget to check your child after they have been playing outdoors.  Remember to check your pets too.

Do you know how to remove a tick?  One of the best ways I’ve heard of is to apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball and put that over the tick.  Hold it in place for 15-20 seconds, after which the tick should come out on its’ own and be stuck to the cotton ball.  I’ve used this method before and it works.

When to call the doctor?

  • If the tick has been on the skin for more than 24 hours.
  • If part of the tick remains in the skin after attempting to remove it.
  • If your child develops a rash, especially a bulls-eye rash at the site.
  • If there are signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pus.
  • If your child develops fever, headache, fatigue, stiff neck or back, or muscle aches.

IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK:

GIRLS ON THE RUN is a program for girls in Grades 3-5.    Tammy Howard is the coach and she is assisted by her sister-in-law, Tamitha Howard.  There are 16 girls participating!  Tammy says the girls are doing a great job. Even the girls who thought they couldn’t run are making great progress and many are running up to 2 miles now.  The girls are preparing for a 5K run/walk event to be held at UVM in Burlington on June 8th, 2008.  Anyone may participate in this race.  If you would like a registration form, please call Tammy Howard, at 265-8152, or stop in the nurse’s office.  Even if you choose not to enter the race, it would be great if you went to cheer our girls on.  They will be running alongside girls from all across the state.  The girls who participated last year said it was a truly awesome experience.

Remember, we have children and staff who are very allergic to nuts.  Please speak with your child’s teacher before sending anything in for class parties, etc.

While on the subject of allergies…

Please remember to notify the nurse’s office if your child has any allergies, especially food or bee sting allergies.

Changes in Immunization Requirements:  We have been notified by the Department of Health that as of the beginning of the next school year, August 2008, there will be new immunizations required for entrance into school.  These will affect kindergarten and 7th grade students in particular. A letter will be coming home in Thursday packets next month.  Please watch for it.

Field trips are coming up for students in many different grades.  Be sure your child has on proper footwear.  NO FLIPFLOPS please!

If your child will be outside much of the day you should consider applying sunscreen.
